Training and Experience
I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1994 and soon after became a founder member of staff at St Anne’s Hospice, Newport. It was as a palliative care nurse that I first developed an interest in nutrition and it’s importance in disease prevention and chronic disease management. I continued my nursing career in Australia 1997-8, followed by community nursing in Monmouthshire and returning to palliative care following the birth of my daughter in 2007.
My hunger to increase my knowledge of nutrition following personal and professional experience of how diet and lifestyle can impact health led me to study towards a postgraduate certificate in Diet, Nutrition and Health at the University of Worcester in 2015. It was a steep learning curve and immensely challenging balancing demands as a mature student whilst continuing to work night shifts as palliative care nurse with being a wife and mother. However, my passion and belief that I could make a difference to inspire and support others to achieve optimal health and wellbeing gave me the determination to succeed.
I was delighted to graduate in 2017 and have since gained valuable experience at St Joseph’s Hospital Newport, which included developing a unique service as a Nutrition Clinical Nurse Specialist. I am currently working part-time as a Bupa Health Adviser at Spire Hospital, Cardiff, enabling me to achieve my ambition to combine my nursing and nutrition skills and knowledge in a Health Promotion role. In addition, it has provided me with the opportunity to pursue my Positively Good Nutrition business as a Zest4life Nutrition and Health Coach.
Continuous Professional Development
I am keen to pursue continuous professional development and regularly attend study days which includes the Institute of Optimum Nutrition (ION) in London and Functional Nutrition Alliance and Zest4life training.
Professional memberships and insurance
I am fully insured and work safely within my professional code of practice as a Registered General Nurse governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and as a Zest4life coach at all times.
In addition to being a passionate foodie enjoying cooking and entertaining with family and friends, I keep physically active by walking, running and cycling as much as possible in my daily life. I also really enjoy kettle bells, Pilates and yoga and attend regular classes or workout at home. Most importantly, I appreciate any opportunity to spend quality time with my family, enjoying the beautiful surrounding area where we live in Monmouthshire, going to the cinema or theatre and travel.
